Animal Science
Do you love working with animals and livestock?
Love animals and are curious about how science and care come together? This elective gives students hands-on exposure to animal care, health, and agriculture while exploring real-world careers working with animals. It’s an engaging way to build practical skills and discover future opportunities in animal and veterinary fields.
Ag Core 1
- 1. Learn about agricultural production, commodities, and environmental impacts.
- 2. Study animal science, including genetics, nutrition, and disease management.
- 3. FFA & Real-World Experience: Maintain a Supervised Agricultural Experience and participate in FFA activities each semester.
Animal Science
- Explore key principles of animal science, including anatomy, physiology, reproduction, nutrition, respiration, and genetics.
- Connect scientific concepts to real-world animal industry practices while developing skills for future education or employment in the Animal Science or Agricultural field.

Vet Science
- Study veterinary science concepts through biological analysis of animal anatomy and physiological systems.
- Explore veterinary career practices and examine how animal physiology informs proper health care and treatment.

Farmers, Ranchers, and Other Agricultural Managers
Plan, direct, or coordinate the management or operation of farms, ranches, greenhouses, aquacultural operations, nurseries, timber tracts, or other agricultural establishments. May hire, train, and supervise farm workers or contract for services to carry out the day-to-day activities of the managed operation. May engage in or supervise planting, cultivating, harvesting, and financial and marketing activities.
Veterinary Assistants and Laboratory Animal Caretakers
Feed, water, and examine pets and other nonfarm animals for signs of illness, disease, or injury in laboratories and animal hospitals and clinics. Clean and disinfect cages and work areas, and sterilize laboratory and surgical equipment. May provide routine postoperative care, administer medication orally or topically, or prepare samples for laboratory examination under the supervision of veterina

Carly Rice
Ag Bio, Animal Science
Carly was born and raised on the Central Coast in her hometown of Santa Maria. She fell in love with agriculture at a young age as a Gold Coast 4H member taking on leadership roles and raising animals for the county fair. She earned her Bachelor’s of Science with an emphasis in Agriculture in Spring of 2023 from California State University, Chico. She returned to CSU Chico to earn her credential in Agriculture Education. On the weekends, Carly hikes with her dog Willow in Bidwell Park or spends time with friends playing board games while enjoying a charcuterie board.
Sarah Richardson
AG Core 1
As a dedicated CTE teacher, she serves as an FFA Advisor and Hog Advisor, guiding students in leadership and hands-on agricultural experiences. She also coaches the Job Interview LDE team and plays a vital role in the Ag Department, helping students develop skills for future careers in agriculture.
